The Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation, along with many partner agencies, have been working on creating a unified strategy for Lake Huron’s Southeastern Shores (Sarnia to Tobermory) to manage and protect the resiliency and ecological integrity of our coastal ecosystems.
Started in 2016, this Action Plan is set to be released December 2019. This non-regulatory plan will create a unified vision for Lake Huron coastal conservation and stewardship efforts. This plan will enable a coordinated approach to address common issues and goals of communities along the Lake Huron shoreline. The plan will develop a list of environmental management strategies by identifying valuable natural features and species, and the threats and stressors that negatively impact them.

This is a disturbing report as in our area from Grand Bend to Goderich, in order to have a healthy beach & water, the report suggests that shoreline protective structures should be installed at one in every 6 km. Since presently, the report indicates that there are one protective structure in 0.6 km, approximately 90% of the present structures will need removal. In order to accomplish this in the long term, the report proposes a managed retreat strategy by not allowing any repair/replacement of shoreline structures that fail.
Although, the report has no authority to enforce these suggestions, the authors want all the municipalities and conservation authorities from Sarnia to Tobermory to adopt their recommendations.
It appears that managed retreat for shoreline residences is not yet dead.
